Fresh lemon juice and zest finish these whole chicken legs, while a peppery dry rub seasons the skin before cooking. Use skin-on, bone-in legs with the thigh and drumstick still attached.

Whole Chicken Legs vs. Drumsticks: Which Cut to Use

Choose whole legs: each piece should include a thigh and its attached drumstick. Chicken leg quarters also include a portion of the back. Separate drumsticks and boneless thighs need their own cooking schedules.

Choose two similar-size pieces that fit in a single layer with space between them. If they overlap, cook in batches and allow extra time.

Smaller whole legs can cook faster than thick leg quarters with a portion of the back attached. Use the early temperature check below to judge your pieces.

Times are planning estimates. Smaller pieces may be ready sooner. Start checking at 25 minutes for smaller legs or compact basket models, and use a thermometer to decide when to stop.

Ingredients

  • 2 fresh or fully thawed, skin-on, bone-in whole chicken legs or leg quarters
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 lemon, for 1 teaspoon finely grated zest, 1 tablespoon juice, and serving wedges

Equipment

  • A basket air fryer or an oven-style air fryer with its perforated air-fry basket or tray
  • Tongs
  • An instant-read food thermometer

For an oven-style model, use the manufacturer’s recommended Air Fry position and drip-tray arrangement.

Instructions

1. Preheat and Dry

Preheat the air fryer to 400°F / 200°C for 5 minutes.

Meanwhile, pat both sides of the chicken dry with paper towels and spread the skin over the meat.

2. Add the Dry Rub

Mix the smoked paprika, black pepper, salt, onion powder, and garlic powder.

Rub the chicken with the olive oil, then coat both sides with the seasoning.

Zest the lemon before cutting it. Reserve 1 teaspoon of zest and 1 tablespoon of juice for serving, and cut the remaining lemon into wedges.

3. Air Fry, Then Turn

Place the legs skin-side down in the perforated basket or air-fry tray, leaving space between them.

Cook for 20 minutes, then turn the legs skin-side up.

4. Check the Temperature

After turning, begin checking after 5 more minutes for smaller legs or compact basket models, or after 10 more minutes otherwise.

Measure both pieces in the thickest meat, away from bone. Cook to at least 165°F / 74°C. For a softer dark-meat texture, aim for about 175–180°F / 79–82°C.

Continue cooking and rechecking as needed. Remove each leg when it reaches your target temperature.

5. Rest and Add Lemon

Transfer the chicken to a plate and rest for 5 minutes.

Add the reserved tablespoon of lemon juice and teaspoon of zest, dividing them between the two legs. Serve with lemon wedges.

Using an Oven-Style Air Fryer

Use the same temperature and turn-and-check sequence above. Start checking at 30 minutes, or at 25 minutes for smaller legs.

This schedule is for a perforated basket or air-fry tray. A solid, foil-lined roasting tray is a different setup and may change the cooking time and browning.

For other foods, use the air fryer cooking-times guide as a starting point, then adjust for your portions and appliance.

Tips for Crispy Chicken Skin

  • Start with a dry surface. Pat away surface moisture before adding oil and seasoning.
  • Leave room around each leg. Keep the pieces in one layer so hot air can circulate.
  • Finish skin-side up. Turn after the first 20 minutes so the skin faces upward during the final stage.
  • Keep the lemon finish light. Add the measured juice just before serving. For less moisture on the skin, spoon it onto the exposed meat and serve extra lemon alongside.

Frequently asked questions

Insert the thermometer into the thickest part of the thigh without touching bone, and check the thick drumstick meat too. Check each leg separately. The minimum safe internal temperature is 165°F / 74°C. The higher 175–180°F / 79–82°C target is a texture preference for dark meat, which contains more connective tissue. Use temperature rather than skin color or clear juices to judge doneness.

Refrigerate the chicken in shallow containers within 2 hours, or within 1 hour if the surrounding temperature is above 90°F / 32°C. Keep refrigerated chicken at 40°F / 4°C or below and eat within 3–4 days. To reheat, preheat the air fryer to 350°F / 175°C. Arrange the refrigerated chicken legs in a single layer. Start checking after 5 minutes and continue until the thickest meat reaches 165°F / 74°C. Larger quarters may need longer. Add fresh lemon after reheating, if desired.
